The Xylose Absorption Test in Infancy.

In recent years the d-xylose test has become a standard technique in the investigation of small bowel absorptive function. It has proved to be a simple and reliable procedure of particular value in distinguishing primary small bowel disease from other causes of malabsorption where the defect is essentially one of intraluminal digestion. The test is therefore potentially of value in the paediatr...

The 5 G. D-xylose Absorption Test.

The 5 g. d-xylose absorption test has been studied in 50 normal subjects. The five-hour urinary xylose content was 1.75 +/- 0.43 g. Xylose absorption was more rapid and more complete with the 5 g. than with the 25 g. test. Comparative studies showed the results of the two tests to be significantly related, but the 5 g. test was a less sensitive indicator of malabsorption than the 25 g. test. Th...

The influence of age on the xylose absorption test.

Xylose absorption tests were performed on patients unselected except to exclude gastrointestinal or renal disease. The proportion of xylose excreted decreases with increasing age. Intravenous xylose tests suggest that this is due to a deterioration in renal function rather than to a reduction in intestinal absorption.

The D-xylose Excretion Test in Coeliac Disease in Childhood.

The value of the d-xylose test in the investigation of malabsorption in children has recently been discussed (Clark, 1962; Jones and di Sant' Agnese, 1963). Clark (1962) employed it in five untreated, and four treated, children suffering from coeliac disease, and Jones and di Sant' Agnese (1963) reported its use in two patients with coeliac disease before and after treatment. These authors rega...

The use of the d - xylose excretion test in children 335 TABLE II URINARY XYLOSE EXCRETION IN ADULTS

In recent years, the pentose, d-xylose, has been widely used in the investigation of small bowel function. Most of these tests of xylose absorption depend on the administration of an oral dose of the sugar, followed by an estimation of the xylose levels of the blood or urine. Disease of the upper part of the small bowel has been found to impair xylose absorption; low blood and urine values have...
